Surprisingly, you can’t remove it with the A dd or Delete Programs utility. You can, of course, launch Internet Explorer one last time for the memories, but it won’t take more than a few seconds to remember why you’re not using it as your primary browser anymore! Please ensure you have a full backup, just in case, and proceed with caution. WARNING: A few readers have reported strange and unintended consequences from removing Internet Explorer on their older PC systems. If you don’t yet have Edge on your computer, definitely grab a copy and install it soonest. Notice that a search for IE returned Microsoft Edge as the #1 result. ![]() Let’s get to it! You can confirm it’s still on your PC by searching for “Internet Explorer”: Still, it’s a good idea to eradicate Internet Explorer from your PC to ensure that it’s never launched and potentially putting your system at risk! HOW TO DELETE INTERNET EXPLORER 11Īnd so, decades after its launch, the time has come to axe MSIE from your computer. Particularly when you consider that Internet Explorer has been an option for Web browsing on a PC for twenty-seven years! ![]() Still a year from the date of me writing this article, but in Internet terms, that’s not such a long time after all. Now Microsoft says on its Web site that “Internet Explorer 11 desktop application will go out of support and be retired on June 15, 2022”. Microsoft Edge was first introduced in 2015, if you’re keeping track! After years of abuse, Microsoft’s development team finally had the bright idea of building a new Web browser – Microsoft Edge – atop Chromium, the open-source browser that also powers Google Chrome. This dragged on for years, even as more and more Web sites said “Best viewed with” and explicitly omitted Internet Explorer from the list. Originally one of the very first Web browsers (it was introduced in August 1995), it was never quite in sync with its features when compared to other choices like Opera, NCSA Mosaic, and especially Netscape Navigator. Be aware Edge IE mode is only stated to be supported until 2029 (may be extended later but no guarantees). There are few applications that have proven more of a bane to designers and developers over the years than Internet Explorer. If you use Edge with IE mode for legacy sites, this is the option you would want (the component removal will disable IE mode). From what I can tell, this is very similar to what the update in June 2022 will do. If Edge isn't present, the policy seems to be ignored. Anything that launches IE gets redirected to Edge. The component can be re-enabled on a few computers if they need it.Īnother option: Block direct launches of iexplore.exe if Edge is used ( ). I removed it on individual server 2012r2 servers without issue, so that may have just been a win7 issue, possibly related to the multiple versions of IE that were supported (8-11). I did the removal on the template, confirmed it worked properly, and then used that image without issues. I found it's best to do this when making the image since several years ago (on win7) I had some issues with it "breaking" things randomly (like services.msc), like some kind of race condition during the removal. I have done this removal on most servers and client computers, even some older ones in the past on Windows 7 (no longer using win7 now). This removes iexplore.exe from Program Files, so anything that launches that exe that won't load it anymore (including some versions of Office addons or Edge ie mode). ![]() You can uninstall the IE11 component ( ). (Programs that load these DLLs (such as mshta.exe) still use the IE engine even if iexplore.exe is disabled/removed). The core browser engine (MSHTML and related DLLs) still resides on the computer. ![]() First, you can't totally "uninstall" IE (at least without unsupported modifications or maybe using server core). ![]()
